REVIEW BY JON DAVIS!
First off, if anyone really knows me, I’m a huge fan of both the Aliens and the Predator franchises. Predator
is bar-none my favorite Action Movie of all time, and the first Alien movie is one of my all-time favorite Horror/Sci-Fi flicks.
Basic Story Idea: This one is a direct sequel to Alien vs. Predator
(a.k.a. AVP). Originally the directors (Strause Brothers) said they wanted to make a movie that wasn’t tied to AVP,
but the studio (Fox) said they couldn’t do that. This movie is a great sequel to AVP. If you did not see the first AVP,
all you need to know is the Predators hunt the Aliens on Earth in Anarctica (in a hidden temple) as a Coming-of-Age Hunt for
young Predators. This is how a Predator gains his first major respect from the rest of the species. This one picks up where
AVP’s ending scene left off, redoing the ending scene of AVP over and extending it into the beginning of AVPR. A
new Hybrid Alien kills Predators on their orbiting ship. This causes the Predator ship to crash on Earth in a backwater town
in Colorado. This unleashes facehuggers and other Xenomorphs (the name of the Aliens) around the town. A Predator “Cleaner”
is alerted to what’s happened and he mobilizes to clean up the mess and cover up all traces of the Predators and Xenomorphs
on Earth. Then it’s humans trapped in a war between a lone Predator and dozens of Aliens.
Acting: The
acting from the Predator is wonderfully good. He shows pathos to his fallen Predator comrades and has awesome moments that
don’t even involve him killing things. The Xenomorphs also show exceptional acting through their various motions and
scenes. However, the humans’ acting ranges between atrocious and mundane to pretty good and serviceable, but overall
it’s very “ugh”-inducing. The humans are their just to be used as fodder for either the Aliens or the Predator,
with the exception of one or two. You don't care about a single human in the movie at all.
Writing/Story: This
is a popcorn and entertainment flick. Pure and Simple. It does not have a lot of great dialogue or three-dimensional human
characters that you care about. It’s all about action, cool scenes, explosions, humans dying in creative ways, and cool
weaponry used by the Predator. If you go into it expecting more than this, you WILL be disappointed heavily.
Special
Effects: Fantastic. The work done on all the Aliens is great. The CGI is handled extremely well, much better than even
I expected. The suits and animatronics are just near-perfect. The Predator steals the show the whole time he’s on screen.
The work behind the Predator is just wonderfully well done.
The Main Disappointments: 1.) - The inconsistency
of the Xenomorph acid blood. Some times it's extremely deadly, other times it's so-so. It depends on the scene's context. 2.)
- The crappy fake "Ripley and Newt" Mother & Daughter characters who are so trying to be a rip-off of Ripley and Newt
in Aliens that it is plainly pathetic. 3.) - The last 5 minutes are crap. That is all. The movie ends on a good note. Then after all that awesomeness, it just keeps on going with stuff we don't care about and introduces
new characters at the last moment, for a possible sequel set up. And yes I DO understand the importance of one of those characters
to the rest of the Aliens franchise. But still.
Overall Opinion and Rating: Rating - 8 outta 10. I give
the movie this rating simply because this has too many great and classic moments in it that define The Predator and Aliens.
I went in wanting good use of an intelligent and skilled Predator and to see the Aliens do what they do best. I got both.
The humans suck and several times during the human sequences it drags on too slowly, but then BAM! you get hit with an awesome
moment from the Xenomorphs or the Predator right afterwards.
Extra Thoughts: "Wolf" (the name of the
Predator) is great. He is effective, skilled, and powerful, but not infallible. He is given tons of great moments and cool
new weapons. My favorite scenes with him are - when he shows remorse and sadness at seeing his fellow Predators' dead bodies,
when he wipes out like eight Aliens in the sewers, and when he unexpectedly kills one of the main humans who I thought was
going to survive the whole movie.
Overall: 8.5 out of 10
